Safety Officers are important members of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Committee because of the following tasks they do in the company :
• They oversee the overall management of the OSH Program in coordination with the other OSH committee members,
• They monitor and inspect any health and safety aspect of the operation,
• They assist government inspectors in the conduct of safety and health inspection and
• They issue Work Stoppage Order (WSO) when necessary based on the requirements and procedures provided by OSH Standard.
In order to be a safety officer, a Labor Advisory from the department of Labor and Employment stated that Safety Officers must be certified by the company’s Human Resource Department based on the qualification requirements of their appropriate category level. See link here
How can I be qualified as Safety Officer?
Training and experience are important in order for you to be certified by your company as their Safety Officer. According to the Department of Labor and Employment – Bureau of Working Condition, Safety Officers(SO) are classified into 4 category levels – SO1, SO2, SO3 and SO4.
Here are the requirements:
• Safety Officer 1
Training
– Mandatory eight (8)-hour OSH Orientation Course
• Safety Officer 2
Training
– Mandatory 40-hour Basic OSH Training
• Safety Officer 3
Trainings
– Mandatory 40-hour Basic OSH Training
– 48-hour Advanced/ Specialized Occupational Safety Training Course relevant to the industry
– Other requirements as prescribed by OSH Standard
Experience
– At least 2 years of experience in OSH
• Safety Officer 4
Trainings
– Mandatory 40-hour Basic OSH Training
– 48-hour Advanced/ Specialized Occupational Safety Training Course relevant to the industry
– Aggregate 320 hours of OSH Related Training or experience (additional training may be converted to experience where 80 hours equals 1 year of experience or vice versa.
– Other requirements as prescribed by OSH Standard
Experience
– actual experience as SO3 at least 4 years
Take note that the number and qualification of safety officers will depend on the population of the company and its workplace classification as may be prescribed by the DOLE.
